A research experiment at KIT

Data linked by meaning. Questions in your own words.

We develop AI protocols to access complex datasets using natural language, independent of the specific type and location of data storage.

Help us by asking questions—simple, complex, or seemingly impossible—to develop and curate the methods.

Ask a question

What this site is for.

Different sources use different words for the same things. A shared vocabulary says which words mean the same, and which do not.

A question the data cannot answer shows us what to add.

A semantic dataspace.

Our long-term goal is a semantic dataspace: a place where knowledge and data from many fields are linked by shared meaning that computers can read. People could then explore it by asking questions in everyday language. They would not need to know how the data is stored or how to ask a database.

Workspaces

Try it yourself in a workspace.

Ask a question about movies and see how a computer understands it. Take part and win: the best question takes first place in the Library. To join, create an account.

Projects

BMFTR (formerly BMBF)

Platform MaterialDigital

Third phase: October 2025 – September 2028

National platform for FAIR data structures, ontologies and digital workflows in materials science. KIT coordinates it; Jörg Schaarschmidt sits on the Management Board and leads the workflows and IT-architecture work.

European Commission, Horizon 2020 / FET (grant 957213)

BATTERY 2030+

1 September 2020 – 31 August 2023

Pan-European battery-research initiative. The group contributed workflow-engineering and simulation-data infrastructure for battery-materials design.

DFG, German Excellence Strategy (grant 390761711)

3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O)

Second phase: January 2026 – December 2032

Cluster of Excellence (KIT and Heidelberg University) on scalable 3D additive manufacturing from molecular to macroscopic scales. Wolfgang Wenzel is among its principal investigators.

Horizon Europe — proposed

MaterialsCommons

Proposal submitted; not yet funded

A proposed federated digital infrastructure for advanced materials research, connecting isolated data, tools and workflows through interoperable standards, FAIR-aligned services and a shared knowledge graph. KIT is named as a participant and task lead, with partners including BAM, CEA, DTU, Fraunhofer ISC, IMDEA, PSI, UCLouvain and EMMC.

DFG — Research Training Group

GRK 2450: Computational Nanoscience

Graduate research training group across KIT and HITS Heidelberg on multiscale-simulation methods coupling quantum, molecular, coarse-grained and continuum models.

Open-source tooling

SimStack

A framework for composing and executing reusable simulation workflows.

Open-source tooling

GENIUS

The agentic workflow framework behind the group's work on agent-assisted simulation protocols.

FAQ

Before you begin.

Who can take part?

Create an account with your email address.

Do I need to know movies?

No. Ask about what you are curious about. Harder questions help us most, but easy ones are welcome too.

What do the results mean?

Answerable now means our movie data can answer the question. Easy ones need one fact. Harder ones need several facts put together.

Not answerable yet means it is a good question that our movie data cannot answer yet. It shows us what to add. These are the most valuable.

Nothing found, not certain means we found nothing that matches in our movie data. That does not show that there is none.

Can I delete my question?

Yes. Open the Library and choose Delete next to your own question.

Who sees my name?

Everyone who is signed in sees your display name next to your question. Choose a name you are happy to share. Your email address is never shown.

Who runs this?

This is a research experiment by the Institute of Nanotechnology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
