Privacy
This page explains what happens with your data when you use this website. We try to use plain words. Terms that may be new to you link to Wikipedia.
1. Who is responsible
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Kaiserstraße 12, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany. The website is run by the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT), research unit of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wenzel. See the Impressum.
2. What this website does with data, in short
- You give us an email address, a display name and a password so that you can have an account.
- The questions you write are saved and shown to the other people who have an account, with your display name next to them. If you switch on "Hide my name in the Library" in your account menu, your name is not sent to them; a blurred mark stands in its place. Your thumbs up or down count in the totals that everyone sees; other members do not see which way you voted. Your comments and your answers to our short feedback questions are seen only by you and by the research group that runs this website (the administrator). Your email address is not shown to other members.
- We do not use advertising, we do not sell data and we do not use services from Google or other companies to measure visits.
3. Which data we keep and why
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address, display name | To create your account, to sign you in, and to send you the emails the account needs: the link that confirms your address, a link to choose a new password when you ask for one, and the answer to an access request. What you write in an access request is read by the administrator. |
| Password | To sign you in. We never keep the password itself, only a scrambled form (a hash) that cannot be turned back into the password. |
| Your questions, the results, votes and comments | This is the purpose of the website: research on how well computers understand questions about movies. |
| Your answers to the feedback questions: how clear a result was, how often you need answers that combine data kept in different places, what the site should show you first when our data cannot answer a question, the order you put the options of a ranking question in, and the words you add to them | To learn how clear the results are, what people need from connected data and what stands in their way, and how the website could help better. The questions are optional, and you can change or clear an answer at any time. We do not use your answers to contact you, and they do not change the score of any question. Apart from you, only the research group that runs this website (the administrator) sees them, with your name. |
| Internet address (IP address) | To protect against too many failed logins and misuse. |
| Browser type | Saved with your sign-in, to recognise your own device. |
| Speed and size of the automatic checks | To see how well and how fast the computer models work. This is visible to the administrator only. |
4. On what legal basis
We process your data to carry out our research task as a public university, and to run the account you asked for (GDPR, Article 6(1)(e) and (b)). Where the law needs your agreement, we ask for it when you create the account (Article 6(1)(a)); you can take it back at any time for the future.
5. Cookies
We use one cookie. It keeps you signed in and is needed for the website to work. It is removed when you sign out, and it expires after at most 30 days (or after 24 hours without use). We use no cookies for advertising or tracking.
6. Who receives data
- Language models. To understand a question, the text of the question is sent to a language model run by a research service: the KI-Toolbox of KIT (Scientific Computing Center). We send only the text of the question, never your name, email address or password. Please do not write personal data into questions.
- Email. These emails are sent through Google's email service (Gmail), from this website's own sender address. They contain your email address, your display name and the link or the answer, nothing else.
- The administrator of this website can see accounts.
- We do not give your data to anyone else, unless the law requires it.
7. Transfer to other countries
The language-model service above is run by a public research institution in Germany. The account emails pass through Google's email service, which may handle them outside the European Union. Apart from that, we do not send your data to other companies or to countries outside the European Union.
8. How long we keep data
- Your account: until you delete the account in the menu of your account, or ask us to delete it.
- Your questions: until you delete them. After that they no longer appear on the website, and their words, and the words of comments and feedback notes about them, are removed from what we keep.
- Sign-ins: at most 30 days.
- Backups: so that we can restore the website after a fault, we keep copies of the database. Nightly copies are kept for 14 days.
9. Your rights
You have the right to: know what data we hold about you (Article 15), have wrong data corrected (16), have data deleted (17), limit its use (18), receive it in a common format (20) and object to its use (21). In the menu of your account you can download your data and delete your account yourself. For everything else, write to the person responsible named in the Impressum.
10. Complaints
You may complain to the authority that oversees data protection: the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Baden-Württemberg (LfDI Baden-Württemberg).
11. How we protect data
The connection to the website is encrypted. Passwords are kept only in scrambled form. Only the administrator can reach the settings. Failed logins are limited so that passwords cannot be guessed quickly.
12. Children
This website is for adults and students. It is not meant for children under 16.
13. Changes
