The small pictures in the film strip on the start page come from Wikimedia Commons: 69 small pictures, twelve of them shown at a time and in another order on every visit. 38 are photographs of film directors and actors, 14 are old film posters and film stills, 15 are photographs of places where films were shot and 2 are posters of open films. Each one was cropped and made smaller; nothing else was changed. The changed pictures of the CC BY and CC BY-SA photographs and posters are offered under the same licence as their source. The old posters and film stills are in the public domain, because their authors died more than 70 years ago or, where the author is not known, the work is more than 70 years old.

How the licences work

Anyone may use these pictures free of charge, as long as the credit stays with them. Three kinds of licence are used.

Public domain means that no copyright is left: the author died long ago, or the author is not known and the work is old, or the author gave all rights up (CC0). Such a picture needs no credit, but we name the author when we know the name.

CC BY lets you use, change and share the picture if you name the author, give the licence and say that you changed it. CC BY-SA asks the same and, in addition, that a changed picture is shared under the same licence.

Each line below names the picture, its author, its licence, with a link to the text of the licence, and its source page on Wikimedia Commons, where the full record is kept. The licence covers the picture only. A portrait does not say that the person shown knows of this site or agrees with it; this site is non-commercial research and advertises nothing.
